Europe Travel Chaos Expected As Air Traffic Controllers Vote To Strike

It’s expected that almost one third of all flights will be disrupted across Europe this summer after air traffic controllers announced they would strike. The controllers are based on EuroControl, the European air traffic management body that regulates EU airspace for both military and commercial flights.

The news comes at a time when the travel industry was hoping it would be able to deal with the expected huge crowds with the least amount of disruption, after seasonal strikes were averted at Heathrow, one of Europe’s largest airports, and the recent protests against pensions reforms diminished across France.

An industry insider told The Telegraph that up to 12,600 flights could be delayed or canceled each day. Controllers are protesting against out-of-date equipment, staff shortages and what they feel is non-strategic

On This Day: Shinzo Abe’s Assassination

It’s been 12 months since Shinzo Abe’s assassination, an incident that sent shock waves across the globe. On the morning of July 8, the former Japanese prime minister was gunned down while giving a speech in Nara Prefecture. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, was quickly arrested at the scene. After he was taken away, paramedics arrived to find Abe lying unconscious with blood all over his shirt. Frantically flown to Nara Medical University Hospital via helicopter, he wasn’t breathing and his heart had stopped. The ex-PM was pronounced dead at 5:03pm, five and a half hours after he’d been shot.

For our latest On This Day in Japan article, we’re looking back at Abe’s assassination and its aftermath, including the controversies surrounding his funeral and his links to the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, widely known as the Unification Church. We’re also taking a closer look at the life

Vlot — Who is Vlot

At the start of June, Vlot (pronounced vee-low) released his new album, with a list of collaborators reading like a who’s who of Japanese contemporary rap. Who is Vlot showcases just how influential he is in the rap world. With Kzm, Miyachi and Lex, Vlot is a chameleon when it comes to adapting his style to fit each collaborator.

The opener is his typically heavy sound, with Young Coco’s “Vlot in this Bihhh” taking his voice with minimal effects applied. Skip to “Dirty Diana” with Lex, though, and it’s a different story. Auto-tune to

Canada travel: 13 more countries eligible for visa-less visits

Canada is expanding the list of countries whose residents are eligible to visit this country without a travel visa.

People traveling by air from Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Costa Rica, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay can now do so for up to six months without a visa, according to a release by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

“This exciting development means that more individuals from around the world can now embark on unforgettable adventures, explore our diverse landscapes, reunite with family and friends, and immerse themselves in our vibrant culture without the hurdle of visa requirements,” said Immigration Minister Sean Fraser in a statement issued Tuesday. “This expansion not only enhances convenience for travelers, it will also increase travel, tourism and economic benefits, as well as strengthen global bonds with these 13 countries.”

Tsukikageya by Natsuki Shigeta: Yukata With an Attitude

An alternative yukata designer and queen of do-your-own-thing, Natsuki Shigeta is a well-loved presence in the subculture fashion world in Harajuku and beyond. “I didn’t study this, I’m just winging it,” she said candidly when we met her at Tsukikageya, her shop and studio in Shibuya’s Tomigaya district. Shigeta is unmissable with her beehive hairdo and impossibly long pink nails. She can often be seen in a yukata with a bling-bling obi belt. Her friends sometimes kindly call her the “Japanese Amy Winehouse.”

We invited Shigeta to the TW May-June 2023 issue party on June 9 to do a pop-up shop and exhibit. Spending the day with her, we got to learn about her life and her philosophy.

I haven’t always been a fan of belt bags. Several years ago, this travel writer would have roasted my friends and family if they wore a fanny pack. However, these days, I don’t leave home without wearing my valuables around my waist. Why am I suddenly a fan of fanny packs?

It helps that they came back in style a few years ago. But my biggest reason is that fanny packs are practical — and after a pickpocketing incident in Paris, I’m convinced they’re the best way to keep my valuables safe (not to mention keeping my hands free for toting bags, texting, carrying espressos , etc.) While the first fanny pack I got this year was

Highway 4 to remain closed for at least another 10 days

Single-lane alternating traffic is expected to be moving along the highway by the weekend of June 24-25, the Transportation Ministry says

Highway 4 is not expected to be open again to motorists until at least June 24, and even then it will be for single-lane alternating traffic only at first, the Transportation Ministry says.

The ministry said crews were working flat-out to prepare for a staged reopening after the highway was shut down June 6 because of debris, including trees, falling from the Cameron Bluffs wildfire.

The shutdown has cut off paved road access to west coast communities such as Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino.

Only an unpaved forest service route via Lake Cowichan is available to motorists who need to get to and from the west coast.

Provincial officials say it could be mid-July before the highway linking the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island is fully reopened.

Fungal meningitis outbreak at Mexico clinic kills four patients from US; what to know

Fungal meningitis outbreaks at cosmetic procedure clinics in Mexico have killed four people from the US and likely infected many more, health officials announced this month.

The deaths were announced after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel advisory last month urging travelers to “practice enhanced precautions” in the area.

Nearly 200 people in the US may have been exposed to the deadly fungal meningitis at two clinics in Matamoros, Mexico, which provided procedures such as implants and liposuction, NBC News reported. The exposure probably occurred in patients who underwent epidural anesthesia, health officials say.

The two clinics, River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3, were closed on May 13, the CDC said.

The CDC said last week that it was collaborating with the Mexican Ministry of Health and US state and local health departments to respond to the outbreak among patients who traveled to Matamoros, which

Marriott CEO on the ‘Resilience of Travel’ and New Paths for Growth

Skift Take

Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano has decentralized some decision-making to help the company move faster in its development growth goals. He’s also looking to add products adjacent to hotels, amplifying its loyalty program.

Sean O’Neill

Anthony Capuano took the helm of Marriott International in early 2021 in what was in some way a battlefield promotion, following the tragic death of the company’s president and CEO Arne Sorensen. After navigating the tumultuous post-pandemic era, Capuano finally has time to pause and fine-tune strategy at the world’s largest hotelier.

“The speed with which we went from the depths of the pandemic and its impact on our business to achieving record-setting EBITDA in 2022 and the strongest quarterly EBITDA that we’ve ever had in the first quarter of 2023, to me, I say that illustrates the resilience of travel and that illustrates the wisdom of our business model,” said Capuano. “So you
