Black member of Florida curriculum group fires back at Kamala Harris’ criticism

A prominent civil rights figure who helped craft Florida’s African American history standards has blasted Vice President Kamala Harris’ assessment of the curriculum as “categorically false.”

Dr. William Allen, former chairman of the US Commission on Civil Rights, says Harris was way off when he claimed in a speech last week that the standards suggested slavery was beneficial to black Americans.

“The only criticism I’ve encountered so far [on the new curriculum] is a single one that was articulated by the vice president, and which was an error,” Allen, who is black, told ABC News in footage touted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press secretary.

“As I stated in my response to the vice president, it was categorically false. It was never said that slavery was beneficial to Africans,” said Adams, who was on the working group that helped devise the curriculum.

Kitten travel 300 kilometers in car wheel

Young, playful and full of adventure, Xena the small but mighty warrior is one brave feline.

The kitten hitched a 300 kilometer, 3 hour ride from Woodstock, New Brunswick, all the way to Dieppe in the wheel well of a Subaru Forester.

“We had to get right up under the rear of the car and finally could see it’s little face up in there,” said Angela MacIntyre Harris, who found Xena in her car.

“I was worried it was going to be quite injured and honestly, it came out. It did take us quite a while, over 30 minutes, but it came out without a mark, it was not dirty, it was, as I said, like a miracle, quite unbelievable.”

Although the cat was uninvited and unexpected, Xena joined the Harris family on their way home from a seven day road trip.

Vikings rookie Jordan Addison cited for reckless driving after going 140 mph: police

Minnesota Vikings first-round pick, wide receiver Jordan Addison, was cited early Thursday morning for reckless driving after going 140 mph in a Lamborghini Urus, according to Minnesota State Police.

The incident report by police, which was posted on social media by multiple reporters, says a state trooper was traveling eastbound on Interstate 94 near Dale Street when the Urus was going 140 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Upon pulling over the driver, Addison, the 21-year-old who was drafted 23rd overall by the Vikings out of USC, was identified.

Airlines urged to provide ‘realistic traveling times’ for domestic flights

Airlines should be forced to provide “realistic traveling times” for domestic flights, according to a public transport lobby group.

The Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) called for the rule to be introduced as part of its Fewer Flights Charter aimed at reducing aviation’s carbon emissions.

Airline schedules do not include time spent at airports before and after flights, which can add a significant proportion to the duration of domestic trips.

For example, easyJet advertises flights between Birmingham and Edinburgh taking one hour and 10 minutes.

Most passengers doing the journey will spend at least the same amount of time at airports.

CBT’S charter states: “Require airlines to give passengers realistic traveling times for domestic flights.”

The group also wants airlines to offer free train tickets to people who book international flights, to encourage them to travel to the airport by rail instead of car.

WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech argued this week that air traffic controllers were to blame for a 2.5-hour flight delay on his own airline.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed to Wagner Group fighters that a senior mercenary named Andrey Troshev now command the private military group, according to comments the Russian leader made to the Kommersant newspaper.

Putin appears to have created a split between senior fighters from the Wagner mercenary group and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin since its failed uprising last month – at least in terms of the narrative emerging from his comments to the Kommersant.

Sudbury news: French River travel trailers bylaw comes into effect

Travel trailer owners in French River are being reminded that they need to start thinking about whether they need a license for their camper – the implementation of the municipality’s new bylaw starts July 15.


Travel trailer bylaws have been a contentious issue across the northeast as several communities have begun to more regulate the practices around these mobile homes.

Mayor Gisele Pageau told CTV News this new requirement is only for those residents who set up permanent trailers – on lots for people to reside within. Those visiting the community will still be allowed to come and go without a license.

“They’re either hooked up to a field bed or whatever septic system they have to be approved,” said Pageau.
