Driver George Alvarez yelled anti-migrant insults, says witness

A witness to the car crash that killed eight people outside a migrant shelter in Texas says the driver made anti-immigrant remarks before he was detained by members of the public.

Suspect George Alvarez, 34, has been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after Sunday morning’s incident.

Police say they are still investigating whether the crash was intentional as well as the driver’s alleged remarks.

Earlier police revealed that Mr Alvarez has a lengthy criminal history, including multiple assault charges.

And shocking security camera footage shared by Texas congressman Henry Cuellar showed the moment a grey Ranger Rover, travelling along North Minnesota Avenue towards Boca Chica Boulevard, smashed into the crowd outside of the city’s Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center.

The Venezuelan government has called for an investigation to determine if the crash was deliberate and motivated by hate

WestJet pilots picket ahead of possible strike next week

The risk of travel chaos is starting to look like a sure thing as Canadians make plans to take the skies this Victoria Day long weekend.

On top of staff shortages, one of Canada’s major airlines is now on the edge of a labor dispute. More than 300 WestJet pilots stood outside Terminal 3 at Pearson International Airport this afternoon, with similar pickets happening in Calgary and Vancouver ahead of a possible strike next week.

Pilots say they are sick of poor treatment, poor pay and the high turnover rate of staff with WestJet.

“We are ready to take legal strike action – or be locked out at that point – but we are still hoping to reach a deal,” Capt. Chris Tholl, a WestJet pilot, told CTV National News.

Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the union representing the striking workers, says pilots are leaving at an incredible rate, stating

Longchamp’s Iconic Travel Bag Is Now at Its Lowest Price of the Year

Two things to look forward to in the summer: Traveling to a far-flung destination and the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, an event that sees our favorite fashion pieces discounted up to 40 percent off. Only one of these things rank high in my book.

More from Robb Report

I have an aversion to traveling—and this is coming from someone who spent a couple of years regularly trekking through airport terminals. Some trips were short, a three-hour trip to O’Hare or Miami International, but more often than not, the destinations were LAX, Heathrow, or somewhere across the Atlantic. They were long and tiresome.

As a result, I’ve learned to maneuver through TSA lines, terminals, and planes efficiently. The point is to get in and out of the airport as quickly

Opinions | You Can Never Be Too Skinny in Japan

As far as I can remember, I would return to Japan from a foreign country and be hit with the same reverse culture shock: everyone here is so darn skinny.

Japanese people being quite thin is no secret, and it’s attributable to Japan’s healthy diet and lifestyle, as well as genetics. With balanced meals consisting of seasonal fish, meats and vegetables, and a habit of walking everywhere in the big cities, it makes Japanese people generally feel lighter than Westerners. What also looms large, though, is the sheer pressure to be thin in Japan. From the sly comments about weight to aesthetic salons in every corner of Tokyo, diet culture can be exhausting and harmful, especially for young women. So, what is the culture around dieting in Japan? And what harm does it cause?

What do we know about Andrey Troshev, the man Putin proposed as the new Wagner boss

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed to Wagner Group fighters that a senior mercenary named Andrey Troshev now command the private military group, according to comments the Russian leader made to the Kommersant newspaper.

Putin appears to have created a split between senior fighters from the Wagner mercenary group and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin since its failed uprising last month – at least in terms of the narrative emerging from his comments to the Kommersant.

The paper was reporting at a meeting held by the Russian president five days after the Wagner rebellion collapsed at the end of June – a meeting attended by Prigozhin and several dozen senior Wagner combatants.

According to Kommersant, Putin told dozens of Wagner mercenaries in the meeting that among the multiple employment choices he offered to them, one included them continuing to fight under their direct commander, a man who goes by the call

List of 7: Real-Life Locations that Inspired Hayao Miyazaki Films

with How Do You Live? — Hayao Miyazaki’s first film in a decade — set for release this week, we thought we’d look at some of the real-life locations that inspired his movies for our latest List of 7. With this one, we’re going global, featuring both domestic and international destinations.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky — Rhondda (Wales)

Miyazaki visited Wales for the first time in 1984, the same year the UK miner’s strike began. Witnessing firsthand the industrial class working fighting back against Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government left a deep impression on the Japanese director. “I admired the way they battled to save their way of life, just as the coal miners did in Japan. Many people of my generation see miners as a symbol; a dying breed of fighting men. Now they are gone,” he said in an

Power outage at Calgary airport results in travel delays, passenger frustration

Several flights headed out of Calgary’s international airport were delayed on Tuesday following a temporary power outage that started earlier that afternoon.

The Calgary Airport Authority said on social media around 2 pm that a temporary power interruption was affecting the baggage system and the International Terminal Building.

It was said later that “all flights” had been delayed and asked guests to coordinate with airlines regarding flight information.

A number of passengers took to social media, posting messages about the hold up, with some saying they were stuck in airplanes on the tarmac for hours.

“This is insane,” wrote Kamran Aslam on Twitter. “Does this airport not have emergency power backup generators and some sort of business continuity plan?”

Shiroiya Hotel Leads the Revitalization Movement in Maebashi

Qthe story of Shiroiya Hotel started during the Edo period, when Maebashi was best known as a strategic castle town. When Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in the mid-19th century, Maebashi flourished as a leading manufacturer and exporter of silk. The city’s prosperity drew the exclusive clientele to the then-called Shiroiya Ryokan, including members of the former Imperial family, and influential artists such as novelist Ogai Mori. This continued until the 1970s, when Shiroiya Ryokan pivoted to the hospitality business.

In 2008, the establishment closed its doors, putting an end to its 300-year history. The landmark was to be completely torn down and possibly replaced by a condominium tower. Some community-minded youths reached out to Maebashi native and current CEO of Jins Holdings Hitoshi Tanaka to see if he could help. He decided to buy the ryokan with his own money — and without any hospitality experience.
