Roman Holiday brings Italian flair to the Theater Royal Bath
Bellissimo! Roman Holiday is just the tonic for a brilliant night at the theatre. Don’t miss it!
The stage is set for a brand new production of the enchanting Roman Holiday which is bringing music, dance and some light relief to life at the Theater Royal Bath.
Audiences are treated to a glorious technicolour production of this timeless tale, now transformed into a fun and lively stage musical. Based on the Academy Award-winning film that made Audrey Hepburn a worldwide star, this production is a captivating experience with two solid leads delivering a soaring performance and creating a little dolce vita on the stage.
The story follows Princess Ann and journalist Joe as they embark on a whirlwind adventure through Rome. Ann, longing for a taste of freedom from her royal duties, escapes her chaperone and finds solace in the company of Joe, who offers to show her the city’s hidden gems. As they explore Rome together, a budding romance blossoms. However, the impending return to Ann’s royal obligations threatens to separate them. Will true love conquer all, or will duty prevail?
Leading the talented cast are West End and Broadway star Michael D. Xavier and Rebecca Collingwood. Xavier, known for his performances in productions such as Sunset Boulevard on Broadway, brings his immense talent to the role of Joe, the American journalist. Collingwood, whose credits include Much Ado About Nothing for the Royal Shakespeare Company, truly shines as Ann, the youthful princess on a twenty-four-hour adventure through the delights of Rome.
Together with an energetic ensemble cast there’s plenty here to love as we are whisked away to 1950s Italy complete with street cafes, music and even a moped!
Under the direction of BAFTA and Ivor Novello Award-winning Jeremy Sams, there’s a visual and auditory feast for audiences. The choreography, crafted by the 2023 Olivier Award-winning team of Matt Cole and Jane McMurtrie, adds an extra layer of magic to the production, as they bring the streets of Rome to life through the captivating dance sequences.
The musical numbers in Roman Holiday are a true delight, as they feature the timeless music of Cole Porter. Audiences are treated to songs such as “Easy to Love,” “You Do Something to Me,” and “Night and Day.” These melodies, combined with a little Italian escapism, create an unforgettable experience which transports us back to Hollywood’s golden age.
Roman Holiday is an endearing production with enough fun and zingy one liners to bring the spirit of the Italians to the stage and to remind us all that life is for living.
