She had travel insurance but injured BC woman still left with a $50K bill

A BC woman is suing an insurance company after she was handed a massive medical bill following her vacation last year.

According to the lawsuit, Chuan Chao was in Texas when he tripped and fell on a sidewalk. The retiree from Surrey was left with severe injuries when he fractured his femur and required surgery in a Houston hospital.

Unlike some other travel horror stories, Chao was prepared for the worst-case outcome and had purchased medical insurance ahead of her trip. She bought it for coverage for her trip through the Pacific Blue Cross and was covered from June 4 to July 2, when she was set to return home.

However, after her surgery, she could not walk and was advised by an orthopedic surgeon that, as a result, “she could not travel.”

Fears of inflation and recession have not slowed down consumer travel

Persistent inflation and higher interest rates have strained many household budgets, and consumers are shying away from some purchases such as home improvement projects or apparel. But millions of US consumers aren’t giving up their vacations.

A Deloitte survey from last month found that 50% of respondents planned to take a vacation that includes paid lodging during the summer, up from 46% last year. In a sign of strong demand, the Transportation Security Administration screened close to 10 million people over Memorial Day weekend, slightly more than the same period in pre-pandemic 2019. And American Airlines this week raised its adjusted earnings forecast for this quarter, thanks to strong demand and cheaper fuel.

Many travelers are seeing some relief when they book airline tickets or fill up the tank before a road trip, at least compared to last year.
