Average cost of travel insurance

Next time you’re booking travel, it may be tempting to skip purchasing a travel insurance policy to cut corners and save some money. But saving a little now could actually end up costing you more later — if you lose your baggage, need to cancel your trip, or encounter unexpected medical costs while traveling.

According to Bankrate’s 2022 Travel Woes survey, “79% of travelers who have taken an overnight trip outside their local area this year experienced at least one travel-related issue.” Having travel insurance in place can keep these minor issues from turning into major, trip-ruining disasters.

Is An Annual Travel Insurance Policy Worth It?

Peter M. Zollman doesn’t stop traveling. In the last few months, he’s been to Berlin, Lisbon, New York, Las Vegas, and visited Utah’s famous national parks. But lately, he’s started to wonder if an annual travel insurance policy might be right for him. An annual (also called a multi-trip) policy covers all of your trips for an entire year.

“What’s the coverage like?” asks Zollman, a marketing consultant based in Orlando. “And what are the pitfalls of annual insurance?”

Actually, annual travel insurance is made for travelers like Zollman. But he’s right — there are some important limits.

“Annual plans are designed for travelers who are taking multiple trips a year and do not have set dates,” explains Bailey Foster, vice president of trip insurance at Trawick International.

For example, Trawick’s annual plans cover

What You Need To Know

Anyone who’s traveled knows that even the most carefully planned trips can go awry. Travel insurance can be a helpful tool to make things right in some situations, like an injury, inclement weather or natural disasters. But it doesn’t cover every possible situation.

Cancel for any reason, or CFAR, coverage can do that. But it often won’t cover 100% of your travel costs.

Here’s what you need to know about CFAR travel insurance, including how it compares to other travel insurance coverage and how to decide if it’s right for you.

What is CFAR travel insurance?

A destination wedding you were planning to attend was called off. Your passport didn’t arrive in time. There’s political unrest in the city you were hoping to explore. For many of these situations, a trip cancellation travel insurance policy wouldn’t help you get your money back. But a CFAR travel insurance policy might.

What to Know About Travel Insurance

Leslie Wahlgren has worked as a travel advisor for nearly 20 years, long enough to have seen plenty of ups and downs, including the roller coaster of the pandemic. Never before, she says, have her clients been more interested in travel insurance than they are right now.

“Just yesterday I sold five policies,” says the Los Angeles–based advisor, who’s part of Plaza Travel.

“People are more aware of what’s happening in the world,” Wahlgren notes, “but they still want to go on trips — and they can, because of the peace of mind travel insurance provides.”

While COVID-19 remains a concern, many people these days are equally worried about flight delays, cancellations, missed connections, and lost bags, according to data from Squaremouth, a comparison-shopping site for insurance. And while you might think of travel insurance as something that only kicks in when a trip is cancelled, many policies also compensate

Can you get compensation if your flight is delayed? Not always.

Welcome to Cruising Altitude, a new column at USA TODAY focusing on travel trends.

While reporting on United Airlines’ recent operational struggles, one person I spoke to told me he looked at the Department of Transportation dashboard and found that the airline wasn’t following its own delay and cancellation policies.

On its face, that seemed true: United was offering travelers extra flexibility to rebook their tickets at no extra cost, but none of the stuck passengers I spoke to said anything about being offered hotel or meal vouchers.

Here’s the thing though: The source who was looking at the dashboard didn’t quite have it right.

United Airlines is committed to rebooking passengers on United or other partner airlines at no additional cost and to provide hotel and meal vouchers and ground transportation in the event of significant controllable delays or cancellations, but the disruptions last week were considered out of

What are the Top 4 myths clients believe about travel insurance?

Post-pandemic, Canadian travelers have realized how essential travel insurance has become, with almost 90% planning to buy coverage for their next trip, showing data from Allianz Global Assistance — a leading travel insurance provider. Despite this awareness, many clients still get stuck on some misconceptions surrounding travel insurance — presenting brokers with the opportunity to bring their clients the best protection, advice, and peace of mind, says Peter Denison, National Director of Allianz’s Broker Channel.

“It’s crucial for a broker’s clients to understand their coverage and policy terms before making a purchase. That’s the unmatched value that insurance brokers bring to the trip-planning process,” Denison explains. “Just like home and auto, travel insurance protects your clients so that they can enjoy their vacations without worrying about potential financial burdens.”

It’s especially important since travel insurance has evolved post-pandemic, Denison adds.

What You Don’t Know About Travel Insurance Can Hurt You

Travel insurance companies are coming to the realization that their customers don’t know much about travel insurance, if they know anything at all. And they’re quietly setting out to change that.

How much don’t travelers know? Consider what happened to Harry White. Before he left for a trip to Denmark, he decided to skip purchasing health insurance because he’d heard that healthcare was free in Europe.

“So, I thought, why bother getting medical coverage, right?” says White, who runs a sports website. “Well, that turned out to be a colossal blunder.”

While he was in Europe, he fell ill and was “shell shocked” to discover he had to pay more than $500 for medication.

“Why?” he asks. “Because the Danish government doesn’t extend its free healthcare to folks from
