What to do if your flight is canceled or delayed

Computer glitches. Staffing shortages. Awful weather. Holiday crunches. So many things can cause a flight to be delayed or canceled.

And this July 4 weekend is set to be a record breaker.

Friday is expected to be the busiest day of the holiday weekend at airport security checkpoints. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 2.82 million people, surpassing the current single-day travel record from June 16.

Friday is also set to exceed the busiest travel day of the holiday weekend in 2019 (July 7), when TSA screened 2.79 million passengers.

Thousands of flights have already been canceled this week, with many thousands of delays.

It’s no wonder travelers are wary about making it to their destinations on time – or at all.

Here’s some general advice for navigating the system when flights are delayed or canceled.

Google’s AI to power Priceline’s virtual travel agent

Online travel agency Priceline, a part of Booking Holdings, plans to bring out a sophisticated chatbot for planning trips and offering hotel suggestions like “a personal concierge,” said Chief Technology Officer Martin Brodbeck.

New tools from Google’s cloud division give Priceline access to generative AI, like the technology behind ChatGPT that can draft text as if a human wrote it. The tools also extract information such as hotel prices from existing data to ensure accuracy.

“You can easily find out that in Bryant Park there’s a Christmas market that runs from early November all the way through the beginning of January when you’re actually booking your hotel,” Brodbeck said.

For Google, drawing business through AI represents a potential way to close the gap with rivals Amazon and Microsoft, as it has long been a distant No. 3 providers of cloud services like data storage.

Joe Burrow: ‘No argument’ Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in the world

Joe Burrow knows who stands in his way to becoming the No. 1 quarterback in the NFL.

As the Cincinnati Bengals started minicamp on Tuesday, the Pro Bowl quarterback was asked who he thinks is the best player in the world. He had a clear answer.

“I don’t think there is any argument right now. It’s Pat,” Burrow told reporters, referring to Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “Until somebody has a better year than he’s had. He’s the one to knock off.”

Looking at the accolades, Burrow’s claim is tough to deny. Mahomes won his second Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP in February. Three days prior to Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVII win over the Philadelphia Eagles, Mahomes was named the league’s MVP for the 2022 season, earning the honor for the second time in his five full seasons as a starter.

As we swing into summer, many of you will be hitting the open road and friendly skies, and maybe even staying in a place where they “leave the light on for you.”

Due to my day job, my life revolves around the world of travel and my experience has helped me compile some tips that may help you on your own journeys — with or without the family.

My iPhone has a folder of all my travel apps, and believe me, they come in handy and offer a variety of services such as the ability to check into my flight while at the dog park or checking out of a hotel at the crack of dawn.

When I book family trips, I book directly with the airlines, hotels and rental car companies. I find it easier to deal with them directly than with third parties. When it comes to third-party

INTERVIEW: Zeina Gedeon on industry highs & lows, and why travel advisors “are the heart of our business”

Travelweek: How would you sum up the main differences between the Canadian travel industry now versus when you first started out?

Gedeon: “Wow, I’m not sure how to answer that without admitting that I have been in the business for a very long time – over 30 years!

“Since first starting out in 1989, the travel industry has undergone significant changes due to technological advancements, globalization and changing consumer preferences. We have come a long way from writing tickets and manually calculating fares. Now, we can find anything while sitting at our desks. But this doesn’t mean it’s easier – definitely faster, but it’s also brought many challenges to our industry.

“The Internet has played a huge role in changing the way we work, customer behavior and knowledge. Social media has become a major influencer in our industry with platforms like Instagram, Facebook and more. I remember the days we
