Thousands of hotel workers are striking again in Los Angeles

Several thousand hotel workers in Los Angeles walked off the job Monday morning over wages and staffing levels in the latest escalation of a heated labor dispute in the region.

The strikes are affecting major hotels near Los Angeles International Airport, disrupting businesses and domestic and international travelers during the peak of summer.

Wages in high-cost Southern California are a key point of contention between hotels and Unite Here Local 11, the union representing hospitality workers. Workers say they are commuting from hours away because they cannot afford to live where they work. They are seeking an immediate $5-an-hour raise, followed by additional increases.

Jovani Ramirez wakes up well before dawn most work days to head from his Santa Clarita home to his 6 am shift as a cook at the Beverly Hilton hotel, one of the three jobs he juggles to support his family.

When he’s done at 2 pm, Ramirez travels to the nearby Century Plaza Hotel for another eight-hour stint. Then some nights he picks up a few Uber driving gigs. Ramirez said his commuting can stretch to three hours each way, and he averages about 3½ hours of sleep a night.

“It’s kind of hard for me because I’ve never seen my kids,” ages 16, 12, 10 and 7, Ramirez said.

Melted ice cream, cockle popcorn and a no-egg-white omelet are among the most unusual hotel room service requests from travelers across the globe, according to a recent study.

Hotels.com’s first-ever room service report surveyed over 470 hotels with in-room dining available in 10 countries including the US, Canada, France and South Korea, according to a news release.

Among the hotel’s quirkiest requests: bison, boiled bottled water, a fish caught by a traveler who wanted it cooked to order and a bowl of rice for a dog, the report found.

Burgers in bed, anyone? The dish isn’t just the most popular room service order stateside, where 49% of hotel survey respondents said it was the top request. Burgers also beat out pizza, tacos, fries and club sandwiches at hotels globally, according to the report.

Tour de France anti-COVID protocol to keep riders in hotels

PARIS, June 3 (Reuters) – Tour de France organizers have set up an anti-COVID protocol for this year’s race, with riders and team staff banned from signing autographs and eating out of their hotels, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Saturday.

Riders and staff members were allowed out of their hotels last year. Access to the paddock at the start of the stages was open to reporters until midway through the race, when organizers decided to close it to “fight against the propagation of COVID-19”.

Access to the paddock will be allowed when the Tour starts in Bilbao, Spain on June 29, with everyone required to wear a mask.

With tourism season around the corner, Gander’s homeless population will soon have to find a new place to live.

The province uses the town’s hotels for emergency shelter situations over the winter. But with an expected influx of visitors in the area over the next few months, hotels are taking back their rooms.

Kim Beers, chair of the Gander Housing and Homeless Hub, said people who don’t have homes of their own have been staying in hotels for years. The practice isn’t sustainable, she said, but there’s nowhere else for them to go.

“We don’t have any kind of emergency shelter at the moment here in Gander,” Beers said.

Travelers making summer plans in California are in luck because Tripadvisor just released the best hotels in the US, and three places in the state made the list.

Hotels in Laguna Beach, Sausalito and Santa Monica were recognized as three of the travel agency’s top 25 hotels in the country, according to a May 23 news release.
