The Musical warms the soul at the Bristol Hippodrome
The Bristol Hippodrome is swaying to the sounds of sea shanties this week as the brilliant Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical arrives in the city.
This acclaimed production is just the tonic to raise the spirits and wonderfully tells the (mostly true) tale of a group of Cornish fishermen who found that their sea shanties were more popular than they could ever imagine.

Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is absolutely packed with songs from start to finish and each of the performers are at the top of their game. This production provides a heart warming story of friendship and commitment, and a night of glorious shanties steeped in tradition.
The musical which is set in Cornwall’s Port Isaac, tells the tale of the residents of the fishing village who congregate in the local pub to sing songs together as a community. At the heart of the gathering are the Fisherman’s Friends, a sea shanty group made up of fishermen from the village.
When an out of work music manager arrives in the village he spots their talent and dreams of helping them hit the big time and reviving his own career.
But the fish out of water Londoner has to work to win over the locals and convince them that his vision can come true, and convince the daughter of one of the Fishermen that his intentions for her affection are genuine too.
This is a fantastic night at the theater with lots of songs and some incredible performances from the whole crew. The cast who plays the Fisherman’s Friends raises the roof with some gusto, and you truly feel transported to the South West of the country.
With stand out performances from Parisa Shahmir as Alwyn and Jason Langley as the plucky chancer Danny, this musical brings home the story of the Fisherman’s Friends and the journey they travel in order to achieve pop stardom, as well as reminding us all of the importance of having your friends and family around you.
There’s lots to love here with Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical delivering a real feel good night at the Bristol Hippodrome where heritage and friendship matter more than hitting the big time.
