Riviera Travel Restarts Rhine, Danube Cruises with Changes

Riviera Travel has restarted sales for its Rhine and Danube river cruises after a pause that began in August because water levels fell to low levels. The pause followed the cancellation of twenty sailings on each river, a move that temporarily halted new bookings.

The updated Danube schedule launches from Vienna and replaces the usual coach transfer between Budapest and Vienna with a rail connection, giving passengers a smoother change of scenery. On the Rhine, the alternative route pushes northward, reaching ports in the Netherlands and Belgium that were not part of the original plan. The website now flags these changes with pop-up notices that appear whenever a traveler selects an affected sailing.

Water levels continue to fluctuate widely from one stretch of river to another, creating an uneven operating environment. The company says it is confining service to sections where confidence in safe navigation is higher, while still delivering the hallmark destinations and onboard experiences that guests expect. Travelers may either accept the modified itinerary or request a full refund if the new plan does not suit their plans.

A dedicated Facebook group called Riviera Travel Official – Low Water Updates supplies real-time guidance for both agents and travelers.

The group has taken over earlier crisis-communication channels and now offers expert assistance, answering questions about schedule adjustments, docking arrangements, and safety protocols. It also serves as a hub where agents can share tips and receive the latest operational notices directly from the staff managing the cruises.

Riviera said it was one of the very few operators to suspend sales because of the low-water situation, a decision that it believes has enabled safer and more adaptable operations.

Customers who booked before the August suspension retain the option to receive a complete refund if they decide not to travel under the new arrangements, ensuring that financial commitments are respected despite the ongoing environmental challenges.
