Meta has disabled dozens of Instagram accounts covering protests against a Jared Kushner-linked luxury resort development in Albania, a move the social media giant attributes to mistakes. The Flamingo Revolution, a growing movement against the €1.4 billion project on Sazan Island, now faces a digital battle that critics say undermines the legitimacy of the investment and the Albanian government’s credibility as an emerging tourism destination.
Copyright claims and digital suppression
Dozens of accounts operated by activists, journalists and an opposition politician were disabled or restricted in late September. Those affected say they received copyright infringement notices for content they filmed or created themselves. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, acknowledged that some accounts were removed incorrectly and has since restored several of them. There is no public evidence linking the restrictions to the Jared Kushner-linked developers or the Albanian government.

A spokesperson for SAZAN Coast, the project developer, characterized the opposition as a “coordinated, manufactured opposition campaign.” The company stated it had no involvement in Meta’s moderation decisions. Italian member of the European Parliament Sandro Gozi demanded an explanation from Meta, noting that the simultaneous disappearance of accounts associated with the same protest movement requires scrutiny.
The situation raises an investment question for the international tourism and hospitality industry: the legitimacy of a luxury destination can affect its global reputation.
Environmental concerns and criminal investigations
The controversy surrounding the Kushner-linked resort development on Albania’s southern coast has expanded beyond social media into environmental disputes and criminal investigations.

The Albanian government originally presented the investment as an opportunity to transform an underdeveloped stretch of Mediterranean coastline into a world‑class destination. The project received strategic‑investor status and plans include luxury accommodation, residences, villas and marina facilities.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has vigorously defended it, arguing that Albania does not have to choose between tourism investment and environmental protection. The government claims the Sazan project can demonstrate how high‑end development and nature conservation can advance together. International investors see opportunity in Albania’s comparatively undeveloped coastline, while environmentalists view it as a finite asset that cannot easily be replaced once built.

According to a report on August 19, the controversy became considerably more serious when Albanian criminal investigations intersected with a land transaction connected to it. Albania’s Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime, SPAK, has investigated Albanian‑American businessman Artur Shehu, who sold land associated with the proposed development.
Prosecutors suspect Shehu of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering and have investigated allegations concerning falsified property documents. Approximately €110 million connected with the land transaction was frozen. A filing indicated that there was no evidence Kushner or the other resort investors knew about the allegations involving the seller when the transaction took place. Albanian villagers have also challenged ownership of land intended for development.
