According to the 2022 Global Travel Trends Report from American Express, 93 per cent of people in India intend to spend at least as much on travel this year as they did during a typical pre-pandemic period. This report analyzes data from seven nations, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, the United Kingdom, and India, indicating that Indian tourists are adopting the ‘new normal’ with greater intention.
Data indicates that 96 per cent of Indian respondents wish to patronize local shops and eateries to bolster the regional economy. For 48 per cent, the primary driver for a trip is the desire to discover novel experiences, while 46 per cent prioritize relaxation and 45 per cent aim to explore fresh locations.
Travel Trends in India
The findings suggest that 2022 will be a more favorable year for arranging trips, with most participants expecting less stress than in 2021. Many travelers are eager to regain command over their itineraries after feeling overburdened during the previous year.
Manoj Adlakha, SVP and CEO of American Express Banking Corp. in India, remarked, “After two tough years, the travel sentiment amongst Indian travellers is upbeat where spending time with loved ones is a top priority.”
The study shows that 94 per cent of those surveyed plan to take more family trips in 2022 compared to 2021, while 89 per cent are interested in multi-generational family vacations than ever before.
Key Insights
Indian travelers appear ready to book and spend more, with 92 per cent stating they would still make reservations for 2022 even if cancellation or changes become necessary later. Almost all participants plan to go on at least one vacation in 2022; specifically, about a quarter expect to take two trips, and a fifth anticipate three.
Furthermore, 94 per cent of respondents intend to spend more on international journeys this year than they did the prior year. There is also a focus on impact-driven travel, with the majority agreeing they want to contribute positively to the communities they visit.
Responsible travel is a priority, evidenced by the fact that 94 per cent said they would take a ‘greencation’ and 93 per cent are more inclined to book with companies committed to reducing their environmental footprint.
Dream Destinations
When considering 2022 plans, 69 per cent of respondents express a desire to visit a dream destination this year. Half of those surveyed are willing to travel alone to achieve this goal. Regarding geography, Asia is the top choice for Indian travelers looking for a dream trip.
Within Asia, visiting various cities within India itself remains the top preference for 51 per cent of the group. Preferences are heavily influenced by multiple activities, live events, and luxury, with 94 per cent favoring destinations that offer more than one type of scene.
Additionally, 91 per cent are interested in cultural immersion and all-inclusive luxury resorts compared to the pre-pandemic era, and 89 per cent of consumers who postponed major entertainment events last year now have plans to return to them.
