Central NY hotel management sent long-term residents scrambling to make rooms for migrant contracts

Salina, NY — Mike Brown and Nikki Henry were amazed May 18 by a knock on their door at the Candlewood Suites hotel.

It was management with a message: The couple had a little over a week to clear out of the hotel room they’d been living in for months while they worked overnights at Amazon.

The company that owns the hotel made a deal to house migrants from New York City, according to lawsuits. Residents said the hotel management was clearing them out to make rooms for new ones.

Hotel management went through most of the building that day, guests said, knocking on doors of people who had called the home for months, and even years. Residents interviewed by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard said they were paying rates that ranged from $700 a month to $2,100 a month to stay in one- and two-room suites with kitchenettes.

Thousands flee homes and hotels on Rhodes as fires spread

Thousands of people have been evacuated from homes and hotels on the Greek island of Rhodes after wildfires engulfed large parts of the island.

The country’s fire service has described the fires as the most difficult it is currently facing.

It is estimated that more than 3,500 people have moved by land and sea to safer locations.

The island has been battling wildfires fanned by strong winds since Tuesday, amidst a heatwave in Europe.

No injuries have been reported, according to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection in Greece.

It said visitors are being evacuated safely from the affected areas of Rhodes – which represent less than 10% of the island’s tourist accommodation – and are being redirected to other hotels on the island.

Five helicopters and 173 firefighters were operating in the area, with three hotels in the Kiotari area reported to have been damaged by fire.

Sartiano’s Opens in The Mercer Hotel

The Mercer Kitchen’s closing in December, after nearly 25 years inside the downtown staple The Mercer hotel, left a big hole in the SoHo dining space. The Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant has been a celebrity magnet, known both for its food and for its cool, downtown energy that has kept it buzzing for more than two decades.

Now, the iconic space has a new resident. Opening Thursday is Sartiano’s, an Italian American joint that aims to fill the shoes it occupies.

More from WWD

The project is the most personal one yet for proprietor Scott Sartiano, who is behind members-only social club Zero Bond as well as clubs 1Oak and Up & Down and the restaurant Butter. Walking through the restaurant, Sartiano explains that he and his team wanted to respect the existing space while bringing their own spin to it.

“It’s such an iconic space, right — it worked and

Home Office faces legal action over children missing from UK asylum hotels | Child protection

Placing unaccompanied children in hotels run by the Home Office is “unlawful”, according to a legal action launched after hundreds of youngsters living in them have gone missing.

Launched on Monday by the charity ECPAT UK, the legal action argues that the Home Office has “no authority” to place unaccompanied children in asylum hotels, from where scores have been kidnapped by gangs.

earlier this year the Observers revealed how dozens of asylum-seeking children were abducted by criminals from a single Home Office hotel in Brighton. In total, more than 400 unaccompanied children have gone missing from hotels run by the Home Office. Some are believed to have been trafficked; others, who disappeared from the south coast, have been found as far away as Scotland.

Of those who have disappeared, 154 are still missing according to a parliamentary debate last Thursday, with their whereabouts unknown despite police efforts to locate them.

Tourists visiting the popular Egyptian resort of Hurghada watched a man get eaten alive by a shark just feet away from a crowded beach.

The incident occurred on the beach of the Dream Beach hotel, according to Russian media reports, which said the victim was a Russian citizen.

Russia’s consul-general in Hurghada, Viktor Voropayev, told the country’s TASS news agency that the fatal attack happened Thursday.

“A Russian died as a result of the shark attack,” he said, identifying the victim as 23-year-old “V. Popov,” who he said was not a tourist but had been living in Egypt for several months. Russian media reports named the victim as Vladimir Popov.

How these residents created an eco-friendly destination

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. − There’s a lot to love about Breckenridge. The mountain town is often considered one of the best ski resorts in the US and welcomes up to 1 million visitors a year.

Though “Breck,” as the locals call it, is charming and walkable – an uncommon feature for many mountain towns – the real focal point is, of course, the mountain itself: five peaks and the highest chairlift in North America, which reaches nearly 13,000 feet. Locals like to say the entire town is ski in, ski out.

Breckenridge may also be one of the most sustainable tourist destinations in the country, thanks to its dedicated community – as other ski resorts are grappling with climate change which threatens their very existence.

Residents have a habit of coming up with new, creative initiatives to push stewardship education, such as Precious Plastics, which gives unrecyclable plastic a second life,

The Ancient Magic Square.

The church of San Pietro ad Oratorium is in the municipality of Capestrano about 40 km from L’Aquila. Left of the main portal there is a stone, a relic of the ancient 9th-century construction, inserted into the walls upside down. It contains the so-called ancient magical square, formed by five words of five letters each that can be read from left to right, from right to left, from top to bottom and from the bottom to top.

The five words “rotas – opera – tenet – arepo – sator” that means “everywhere-operates-holds-plow-sower”, have been variously interpreted, and some researchers thought that they hid the anagram of “Pater Noster”.

One likely translation is The farmer Arepo has [as] works wheels [a plough]; that is, the farmer uses his plow as his form of work.

The church was believed to be founded in 752 by Desiderius, the
